Electapres.com Vilsack becomes key player in Clinton campaign

The Des Moines Register

Sioux Center, Ia. - Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack has assumed a role in Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign unlike any of the New York Democrat's other national advisers.

He campaigns for her in Iowa and other key states, spends hours each week on the phone with donors and elected officials and has helped forge policy ideas Clinton presents on the campaign trail.

In this way, Vilsack has made the quick and seemingly effortless transition from a one-time Clinton rival for the 2008 nomination to a go-to player in her campaign.

Electapres.com Clinton aids Vilsack with campaign debt

The Boston Globe

DES MOINES, Iowa --Democratic presidential contender Hillary Rodham Clinton has agreed to help one-time candidate Tom Vilsack, who endorsed her on Monday, as he seeks to retire a campaign debt of more than $400,000.

Clinton spokesman Mark Daley said he was uncertain how Clinton would go about raising money for Vilsack, but he conceded that at some point, she would have to contact her supporters. "Someone in her shop is going to have to reach out," Daley said.

The Des Moines Register

Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack pledged today to campaign for Hillary Clinton for president, becoming the first former presidential candidate to endorse any of the remaining hopefuls.

"Hillary Clinton has been tried and tested like no other candidate for president," Vilsack said, with Clinton looking on, during a midmorning news conference in Des Moines. "She is prepared to run a tough race and to win that race."

Electapres.com Vilsack to endorse Clinton

The Des Moines Register

Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack will endorse U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential run Monday, an official close to the situation said today.

Vilsack gave up his own run for the presidency in February, setting up a scramble for his supporters. He is widely considered a possible pick for vice president or a cabinet post if a Democrat wins the White House in 2008.

Electapres.com Edwards' campaign rides on Iowa

The Des Moines Register.

If any candidate inherits something from Tom Vilsack's departure from the Democratic presidential campaign, it's John Edwards.

What he gets: Pressure.

The former Iowa governor's campaign hinged on winning his home state's caucuses, the start of a fiercely competitive nominating gauntlet. Vilsack's decision Friday to quit the race shifts much of the burden of expectations in the caucuses to Edwards, the front-runner in early Iowa polls.

Electapres.com Iowans weren't wowed by Vilsack

The Concord Monitor.

Former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack's decision to abandon his White House bid drew disappointment here from his handful of early supporters as well as from those who feel the crowded early nominating calendar is squeezing out all but the richest candidates. But Vilsack's withdrawal doesn't seem to change much in the First Primary State.

Curious what it would mean for Vilsack's home state, we checked in with a couple of pundits in the land of ethanol and the first caucuses.

Electapres.com 'Not the last we've seen' of Vilsack, Harkin says

The Des Moines Register.

Washington, D.C. - One of former Gov. Tom Vilsack's earliest and most fervent supporters in his presidential race was Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Ia., who was left without a candidate when Vilsack withdrew Friday.

Vilsack called Harkin prior to his news conference to tell him about his decision, and Harkin issued a statement saying he "learned with great disappointment" about the end of Vilsack's bid for the Democratic nomination.

"With Tom's strength and character, he would have made an exceptional president," said Harkin, who made his own failed attempt at the presidency in 1992. "That's why when I spoke to him today, I urged him to continue his leadership for Iowa and the nation. This is certainly not the last we've seen of Tom Vilsack."

Electapres.com No shortage of ideas in Vilsack's brief run

The Des Moines Register.

Former Gov. Tom Vilsack was the first Democrat to formally enter the 2008 presidential race when he announced his candidacy in November. On Friday, he was the first to officially drop out, citing "money and only money" as the reason.

It's a reminder that sometimes going far in politics is less about being a good candidate than about being well-recognized and well-funded.

Vilsack was a good candidate. As governor of Iowa, he advocated for renewable energy, better education and health insurance for children and families. He has a reputation as a centrist who refused to raise taxes. He made a name nationally as chair of the Democratic Leadership Council.

Electapres.com Will Richardson gain from Vilsack's loss?

Albuquerque Tribune.

SANTA FE — Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack's loss could be Gov. Bill Richardson's gain.

Richardson should do what he can to scoop up any of the staffers Vilsack's now-defunct campaign is leaving behind, says University of Virginia political science professor Larry Sabato.

"Richardson has targeted Nevada and New Hampshire among the first four states, but he needs to make at least a decent showing in Iowa, too. One or more key staffers could help Richardson make up some ground in Iowa," Sabato said.

Electapres.com Obama quick to seek Vilsack’s N.H. supporters

The Nashua Telegraph.

CONCORD – Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack called Gary Hirshberg on Thursday night to tell him he was ending his presidential campaign. Friday morning, the phone rang again: it was Sen. Barack Obama, who waited just two minutes after Vilsack’s public announcement to ask for Hirshberg’s support.

Hirshberg, the founder and chief executive officer of Stonyfield Farm yogurt, was one of Vilsack’s earliest and most prominent New Hampshire supporters. He said Vilsack’s departure from the race was disappointing both personally and in terms of what it says about the political process.

Electapres.com Vilsack Drops Out of 2008 Presidential Race

The Washington Post.

Former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack, who was the first Democrat to announce his candidacy for president in 2008 but has found it difficult to raise the money needed to compete against his better-known rivals, quit the race today.

"This process has become to a great extent about money -- a lot of money," he told reporters at a news conference today. "And it is clear to me that we would not be able to continue to raise money in the amounts necessary to sustain not just a campaign in Iowa and New Hampshire, but a campaign across this country.

Electapres.com Vilsack Camp Raps Edwards on Iraq

ABC News.

ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: In a sign of just how fierce the competition is among Democrats to prove how committed they are to ending U.S. fighting in Iraq, the presidential campaign of former Gov. Tom Vilsack, D-Iowa, rebuked former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., Wednesday for not wanting to end funding for all U.S. combat in Iraq.

During a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, Edwards proposed capping the amount of money for U.S. troops in Iraq to pressure the Bush administration not to go forward with its plans to send more than 20,000 additional U.S. troops. He stopped short, however, of calling on Congress to stop funding for all U.S. fighting in Iraq -- as Vilsack has done -- saying to do so would further destabilize the war-torn country.

Electapres.com At independent living center, Vilsack warns war saps America

The Concord Monitor has the story.

Tom Vilsack visited Concord yesterday to talk about improving housing and services for people with disabilities, but he couldn't stay away from the 2008 primary's No. 1 one topic: Iraq.

During an hour-long speech at Granite State Independent Living, Vilsack answered questions and outlined the advances he made in disability-rights during his eight years as governor of Iowa. But he returned to the war over and over, decrying planned troop increases and predicting dire domestic consequences.

"If 20,000 more troops go over there, resources will follow," said Vilsack. "I can guarantee you that in Congress when a motion is made to increase housing for people with disabilities . . . someone will say we just simply do not have the resources. We do have the resources; we just don't have the priorities."

Electapres.com Iowa: No homefield advantage for Vilsack

Via AP at ProJo:

Iowa politicos learned from Tom Harkin in 1992 that favoring the homegrown candidate scares away all the other contenders, thus rendering the Iowa Caucus impotent. State strategists say they won't make that mistake again.

He may be Iowa's governor, but Tom Vilsack's home-field advantage isn't enough to force rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination to cede him the game - far from it.

Not only won't Vilsack get a pass in Iowa's 2008 Democratic caucuses, but party leaders are bending over backward to keep the start-off of the contest evenhanded, key activists and strategists said.

It will not, they say, be another 1992, the year Tom Harkin - the Hawkeye State's popular U.S. senator - ran for president. Harkin's Democratic rivals skipped the Iowa caucuses, arguing that it wasn't possible to compete with him on his home turf.

As a result Harkin won Iowa easily, but got none of the caucuses' famous momentum and media attention. He wound up quickly leaving the Democratic race in which Bill Clinton later prevailed.

Electapres.com Here they come

Via Washingtonpost: Iowa Gov. Vilsack to Run for President

Democratic Gov. Tom Vilsack of Iowa officially joined the fray today, two days after the mid-term elections. Iowa kicks off the voting portion of presidential election season with its precinct caucuses in 2008. Vilsak, the home-grown candidate, will work hard to build his efforts in Iowa and cement relationships with activists and donors before the rest of the candidates declare themselves in the coming months. This puts more pressure on other potential candidates to declare sooner than later.

Democratic Gov. Tom Vilsack of Iowa took the initial step in his long-shot bid for the White House Thursday, establishing a presidential campaign committee and seeking an early jump on 2008.

Last week, Rep. Duncan Hunter of California, the Republican chair of the House Armed Services Committee, also declared his intention of running in 2008. With the Democrats taking control of the House, Hunter will lose his chairmanship.
