Electapres.com Not Relevant? Sharpton Scoffs at the Idea

The Washington Post

NEW YORK -- Even by his own frenetic standards, the Rev. Al Sharpton has had a busy 12 months.

Late last year was the police shooting in Queens of Sean Bell, an unarmed black man leaving a bachelor party, and Sharpton organized the protests. There was the spring controversy over racially insensitive remarks by shock jock Don Imus, with Sharpton leading the calls for Imus's firing.

Sharpton put together a march in Jena, La., in support of six black teenagers jailed in the beating of a white student, and he held a protest rally outside the Justice Department in Washington to demand more prosecution of hate crimes.

And now, he is being wooed by the leading Democratic presidential candidates, all of whom seek his endorsement. "I think this has been a banner year, to say the least," said Sharpton, smiling contentedly over coffee. "This year proved the real revival of civil rights activism."

Electapres.com Sharpton Criticizes GOP No - Shows

Associated Press via NYT

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Civil rights leader Al Sharpton said Thursday black voters should punish Republicans who fail to show for presidential candidates' forums hosted by the National Urban League and the NAACP.

''We can only assume you weren't courting us,'' Sharpton said. ''Republicans have to lay out their policies and court the African-American vote. We need to have our interests debated in the market place.''

Sharpton noted there won't be another NAACP or Urban League conference before the presidential primaries.

''When I was in high school, I may not have gone to the prom with the girl I wanted, but with the girl I could get,'' he said, suggesting Republicans leave black voters little choice but to vote for a Democrat.

Electapres.com Romney hopes to use Iowa to shake up '08 race

CNN

The first state where Republicans actually vote is Iowa. The Hawkeye State could turn those national polls upside down overnight. In the 2004 Democratic race, the Iowa caucuses blew former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean out of first place and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry into the lead in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The Des Moines Register polled Republican caucus participants in Iowa last week. The results are very different from the national polls. Romney vaults from third place to first by a sizeable margin. (Romney 30 percent, McCain 18, Giuliani 17).

Many Republicans nationwide don't know much about Romney, but he won the first-quarter fundraising race and he is using his money to build a network of supporters in Iowa. He is also running a TV ad targeting conservatives, who dominate the Iowa Republican caucuses. "Legal immigration is great. But illegal immigration, we've got to end. . . . And amnesty is not the way to do it," Romney says in the ad.

Electapres.com Romney Assails Sharpton's Mormon Comment

Associated Press via NYT

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Wednesday denounced the Rev. Al Sharpton's remarks about God and his Mormon faith, saying it could be construed as ''a bigoted comment.''

''It shows that bigotry still exists in some corners,'' said Romney, who spoke to reporters after a campaign event. ''I thought it was a most unfortunate comment to make.''

On Monday, Sharpton said in a debate that ''those of us who believe in God'' will defeat Romney for the White House. He denied he was questioning the Mormon's own belief in God.

Electapres.com Sharpton Denies Disputing Romney's Faith

Associated Press via NYT

BOSTON (AP) -- The Rev. Al Sharpton, who recently urged that radio host Don Imus be fired for making a racially insensitive remark, said in a debate that ''those of us who believe in God'' will defeat Republican Mitt Romney for the White House. But Sharpton denied he was questioning the Mormon's own belief in God.

Rather, the New York Democrat said he was contrasting himself with Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author he was debating at the time.

Electapres.com Speaking to Sharpton’s Group, Obama Emphasizes Principles

The New York Times

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois told several hundred black political organizers yesterday in Manhattan that African-Americans had been “complicit in diminishing ourselves” by talking about blacks in the same sort of degrading terms that the radio host Don Imus recently used about the Rutgers women’s basketball team.

“I’ve heard those words around the kitchen tables,” Mr. Obama said, speaking to members of the Rev. Al Sharpton’s group, the National Action Network at its ninth convention. “All of us have been complicit in diminishing ourselves, and engaging in the kind of self hatred that keeps our young men and young women down. That’s something we have to talk about in this election.”

The New York Sun

The Reverend Al Sharpton, one of the most prominent black civil rights activists in the country, is challenging the policies of the only African-American candidate for president.

Rev. Sharpton told CBS News yesterday that he wanted Senator Obama, a Democrat of Illinois, to explain why he backed Senator Lieberman when the Connecticut lawmaker was locked in a tight race for the Democratic Party nomination for the Senate last year.

Electapres.com Williams takes Sharpton to task

The State (SC).

The biracial daughter of the late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond says the Rev. Al Sharpton “overreacted” to news reports he is a descendant of a Thurmond family slave.

“He’s been on TV constantly saying the many negative things that he did, and to me that was an overreaction,” Essie Mae Washington-Williams said of the New York City civil rights activist. She spoke during a Tuesday meeting with reporters at the Columbia Marriott.

Electapres.com Sharpton wants DNA test to see if he's related to Strom Thurmond

The State (SC).

NEW YORK - The Rev. Al Sharpton said he wants a DNA test to determine whether he is related to former segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond through his great-grandfather, a slave owned by an ancestor of the late senator.

"I can't find out anything more shocking than I've already learned," Sharpton told the Daily News, which on Sunday reported the link based on genealogists' findings.

Sharpton learned of his connection to Thurmond, once a prominent defender of segregation, last week through the Daily News, which asked genealogists to trace his roots.

Electapres.com Sharpton takes Biden to task on remarks

MSNBC News has the story.

NEW YORK - Civil rights activist Al Sharpton on Thursday took Sen. Joe Biden to task for calling Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama "articulate" and "clean," questioning how the description reflects on other blacks.

Biden, still trying to deal with the fallout from his remarks, spoke by telephone on Sharpton's radio show. The Delaware lawmaker spent his first day as an official presidential candidate Wednesday explaining his statement that Obama is "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean."

Electapres.com Why Democrats should ignore Al Sharpton.

The New Republic has the story.

The 2008 Democratic primary passed an important milestone last week with the introductory libations that candidates make at the altar of the Reverend Al Sharpton. Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the primary frontrunners, both made time for Sharpton when he came to Capitol Hill, as did Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Biden. After a 15-minute meeting for which she left a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on troop levels (an issue she says is important to her), Clinton gushed, "I'm delighted to have Reverend Sharpton here today to talk about issues important to our country, to his commitment to the twenty-first-century civil rights agenda; it is one that I share." Sharpton was equally pleased with Clinton, telling The New York Times, "I'm not endorsing anyone at this point, but she has more of a civil rights program laid out. And I always know where I stand with her. She is always accessible and welcoming." According to the Times, Sharpton's visit to Washington was intended as a thinly veiled warning to Barack Obama "that he should not take for granted the political support of Mr. Sharpton." The reverend told the Times, "I left the meeting a little curious, feeling that he was noticing our civil rights agenda, but I didn't understand what his civil rights agenda is."

Electapres.com Sharpton Goes to Washington to Talk to Party’s ’08 Hopefuls

The New York Times has the story.

WASHINGTON — The Rev. Al Sharpton, a man who says he knows a well-tailored suit from a fake, went to the United States Senate on Thursday to do some comparison shopping, meeting separately with four Democrats who are seeking the 2008 presidential nomination to discuss civil rights.

One purpose of the visit, two New York advisers and confidants of Mr. Sharpton said, was to send a signal to Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois and a fellow African-American, that he should not take for granted the political support of Mr. Sharpton, a power broker in New York politics and a presidential candidate in 2004.

CQPolitics has the story.

Sharpton Hints at Run, Bumps Obama: Already a dozen strong, the field of Democrats officially running for president or seriously thinking about it has gained a new — but very familiar — name: that of Al Sharpton, a Pentecostal minister and political activist who made a splash with his brief bid for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination.
