Electapres.com Ralph Nader Flirts with Presidential Bid

ABC News

Ralph Nader has formed a presidential exploratory committee, and said in an interview Wednesday that he will launch another presidential bid if he's convinced he can raise enough money to appear on the vast majority of state ballots this fall.

Nader, who ran as an independent candidate in each of the past three presidential elections, told ABCNews.com that he will run in 2008 if he is convinced over the next month that he would be able to raise $10 million over the course of the campaign — and attract enough lawyers willing to work free of charge to get his name on state ballots.

Nader said he established an exploratory committee and launched a Web site after Dennis Kucinich, a liberal Ohio congressman, announced his decision to withdraw from the presidential race last week.

Electapres.com Dennis Kucinich to Drop '08 Presidential Bid

ABC News

ABC News' Jennifer Duck Reports: Presidential dark horse Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, will announce at a news conference tomorrow in Cleveland that he is dropping out of the presidential race, ABC News has confirmed.

Since announcing his intention to seek the White House, Kucinich has trailed badly behind his Democratic rivals, raised little money, and was recently shut out of Democratic debates because of his long shot status.

Kucinich is expected to announce that he is foregoing his presidential aspirations to focus on his congressional seat, that may be in jeopardy.

Electapres.com Kucinich OK'd for Debate, Appeal Planned

Associated Press via NYT

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- NBC News said Monday it will appeal a judge's ruling rather than include Democratic presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich in a candidates' debate in Nevada.

''We disagree with the judge's decision and are filing an appeal,'' said a statement provided by Jeremy Gaines, a vice president for MSNBC, sponsor of Tuesday night's debate. Gaines said the parent network would seek an immediate hearing before the Nevada Supreme Court.

Hours earlier, Senior Clark County District Court Judge Charles Thompson ruled that Kucinich, an Ohio congressman, must be allowed to participate. If he is excluded, Thompson said he would issue an injunction to stop the televised debate.

Electapres.com Kucinich Seeks NH Dem Vote Recount

Associated Press via NYT

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- Democrat Dennis Kucinich, who won less than 2 percent of the vote in the New Hampshire primary, said Thursday he wants a recount to ensure that all ballots in his party's contest were counted. The Ohio congressman cited ''serious and credible reports, allegations and rumors'' about the integrity of Tuesday results.

Deputy Secretary of State David Scanlan said Kucinich is entitled to a statewide recount. But, under New Hampshire law, Kucinich will have to pay for it. Scanlan said he had ''every confidence'' the results are accurate.

In a letter dated Thursday, Kucinich said he does not expect significant changes in his vote total, but wants assurance that ''100 percent of the voters had 100 percent of their votes counted.''

Kucinich alluded to online reports alleging disparities around the state between hand-counted ballots, which tended to favor Sen. Barack Obama, and machine-counted ones that tended to favor Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. He also noted the difference between pre-election polls, which indicated Obama would win, and Clinton's triumph by a 39 percent to 37 percent margin.

Electapres.com Kucinich Asks Supporters to Back Obama

Associated Press via NYT

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich on Tuesday asked his supporters to make rival Barack Obama their second choice if he doesn't meet a cutoff point for voting in Iowa's caucuses.

Kucinich, an Ohio congressman at the back of the pack of Democratic hopefuls, seemed to concede a loss in the caucuses. He said his recommendation was for ''Iowa only.''

''Senator Obama and I are competing in the New Hampshire primary next Tuesday, where I want to be the first choice of New Hampshire voters,'' Kucinich said in a statement.

Candidates in Thursday night's caucuses must reach a level of support in each of the state's 1,781 precincts -- typically 15 percent of those who attend. Candidates who fail to meet that aren't considered viable, and their supporters can move to another candidate or go home.

Electapres.com Kucinich Writing Off His Autobiography, Book's Publisher Says

Washington Post

Dennis Kucinich has an autobiography out, but very few people know about it.

That's because the Democratic presidential candidate has barely mentioned the book. In fact, he never signed a contract with his publisher. And that has left executives at the small Beverly Hills company frustrated and upset.

"I've been exceptionally disappointed in the man," says Michael Viner, chief executive of Phoenix Books. After printing 20,000 copies and spending more than $100,000 on promotion, he says, he has seen the book sell 500 copies in two months. "It's like we made a campaign contribution," Viner says. "He left us holding a very large bag."

Electapres.com Kucinich not short on confidence

The Concord Monitor

....Kucinich, the story goes, leveled a defensive player with a cross body block, turning the linebacker, as he put it, into an accordion. "What this shows," Kucinich said, "is that no matter what . . . if someone says you can't do something, if you try, you never know what you will be able to accomplish."

Kucinich is far behind in the polls, with the state's primary fast approaching. Just like he was in 2003, when ABC's Ted Koppel, moderating a debate, peppered Kucinich over his decision to remain in the race, without much money or big-name endorsements.

He didn't drop out then, and he won't now.

Instead, he's touring New Hampshire, spreading his liberal views, saying the Bush administration lied about the war in Iraq and calling for the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney.

Electapres.com Kucinich Questions Bush's Mental Health

Associated Press via NYT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich questioned President Bush's mental health in light of comments he made about a nuclear Iran precipitating World War III.

''I seriously believe we have to start asking questions about his mental health,'' Kucinich, an Ohio congressman, said in an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer's editorial board on Tuesday. ''There's something wrong. He does not seem to understand his words have real impact.''

Kucinich, known for his liberal views, trails far behind the leading candidates in most Democratic polls. He was in Philadelphia for a debate at Drexel University.

Electapres.com Kucinich is wise to play the fool

The Politico

Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich opposed the Iraq war from the beginning, voted against the Patriot Act and has drawn up articles of impeachment for Vice President Cheney.

Compared with his rivals, he’s been far closer to the views of his party’s base, and on issues that matter, he’s been years ahead of his competitors, who are frequently dragged along — kicking and screaming — by the grass roots.

And yet Kucinich, who ran for president in 2004 and campaigned in Las Vegas last week, is more often viewed as comedy fodder than as party leader or contender.

The mockery extends from highbrow — a New Yorker cartoon depicting Kucinich winning the Mars primary — to lowbrow: jokes about his height, ears, veganism and so on. The words “snicker” and “Kucinich” together return 50,000 hits from Google, including a website or two tracking the mockery.

Electapres.com Kucinich Rips Edwards on Debate Remarks

Associated Press via NYT

NEW YORK (AP) -- An angry Dennis Kucinich lashed out at John Edwards on Friday, saying his Democratic rival showed ''a consistent lack of integrity'' by suggesting fewer candidates should participate in presidential forums and then trying to explain his remark to reporters.

''This is a serious matter and I'm calling him on it,'' Kucinich, an Ohio congressman, said in a telephone interview Friday. ''Whispering, trying to rig an election, then denying what's going on and making excuses. It all reflects a consistent lack of integrity.''

Kucinich's comments came after Edwards and Hillary Rodham Clinton were overheard Thursday discussing the possibility of limiting the number of participants in future presidential forums.

Electapres.com Kucinich’s Impeachment Proposal Takes Antiwar Stand to New Lengths

CQ Politics

Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich on Tuesday introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney for “high crimes and misdemeanors” related to his participation in the buildup for the war in Iraq — and what the longshot Democratic presidential contender said was belligerent rhetoric toward Iran.

In an 18-page draft resolution, Kucinich outlined three charges against Cheney: that he “manipulated the intelligence process . . . by fabricating the threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction” to justify the war in Iraq; that he deceived citizens and Congress “about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda” to justify the war; and that he has “openly threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran, absent any real threat to the United States, and has done so with the United States’ proven capability to carry out such threats.”

As he did in 2004, Ohio Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich is running a longshot campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination on an antiwar platform — and on a shoestring budget.

In a filing to the Federal Election Commission made by Sunday’s deadline, Kucinich reported $345,000 in receipts for the first quarter of 2007, bringing his total (including a small amount he raised in 2006 after forming his presidential campaign committee in December) to $359,000.

Electapres.com Kucinich campaign: ‘It’s Called Heart’

Newsweek.

You don’t have to pay thousands of dollars to rub elbows with an antiwar Democratic presidential candidate in Hollywood. Rep. Dennis Kucinich was in town this past weekend, lining up support for his own bid for the White House. How much to meet the congressman from Cleveland? Twenty-five bucks, at one Culver City fund-raiser. And he actually voted against going into Iraq. In fact, he’s the only Democratic candidate to have done so. And unlike the current front runner, he has the experience of having run for president himself before. A recent Cook Political Report/RT Strategies poll showed him weighing in at 1 percent—a tough spot, to be sure, but still ahead of Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd. Kucinich spoke out against the war in his 2004 run; this time around, polls show, the country is thinking more like him. Does that mean the dark horse’s time has come? He spoke with NEWSWEEK’s Susannah Meadows about winning, falling in love and playing third-string quarterback.

Electapres.com Kucinich and The Cassandra conundrum

Portsmouth Herald (NH) has the story.

While watching on television the recent State of the Union speech, I noticed how Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, had a lengthy handshake with and was talking to President Bush. I was curious because Kucinich, who is making a second run as a presidential candidate, began thundering against the Iraq war before it was launched and he hasn't let up at all. He has relentlessly dissected the administration's policies, competence and motivations concerning Iraq for the past four years, and it's hard to imagine Bush wanting much of a heart-to-heart with Kucinich.

I was curious enough to call the six-term congressman from the Cleveland area and ask him about the conversation.

Electapres.com Kucinich is in, again

Democrat Dennis Kucinich will announce this week that he is back in the race for president. He ran in 2004 as an anti-war candidate and plans to do so again in 2008.

Some history: Kucinich's and Ted Koppel had a bit of a spat during the 2004 nomination process.

In prepping for a debate in Durham, NH in December 2003, Ted Koppel made the following comment:

"How did Dennis Kucinich and Al Sharpton and Carol Moseley Braun get into this thing? Nobody seems to know. Some candidates who are perceived as serious are gasping for air, and what little oxygen there is on the stage will be taken up by one-third of the people who do not have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the nomination."

During the debate itself, Koppel made it clear that he considered Kucinich, Sharpton and Braun to be "vanity" candidates. Kucinich fired back, "I want the American people to see where the media takes politics in this country," effectively shutting down Koppel's disdainful attitude.

We'll be on the alert to see if Kucinich is as feisty this time around. With the war in Iraq still raging, he likely will not disappoint.
