Clinton Talks Energy in New TV Ad
Associated Press via NYT
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton began airing new television ads in New Hampshire and Iowa Friday highlighting the New York senator's plan for energy independence and creating new sources of power.
In the ads, Clinton is shown speaking to voters and promoting her proposed $50 billion strategic energy fund.
''And where would I get the money?'' Clinton asks. ''I would take away the tax subsidies from the oil companies. They don't need your tax dollars any more.''
The 30-second ads come days after Clinton campaigned in both early voting states and unveiled several new clean energy proposals.

Thompson Won't Rule Out Fla. Drilling
Associated Press via NYT
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP ) -- Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson seemed taken by surprise when asked Tuesday about oil drilling in the Everglades, apparently unaware it's been a major Florida issue.
Before answering, he laughed at the question.
''Gosh, no one has told me that there's any major reserves in the Everglades, but maybe that's one of the things I need to learn while I'm down here,'' Thompson said after talking over state issues with Gov. Charlie Crist.
Thompson, who has called for seeking U.S. oil resources wherever they exist, was asked by an Associated Press reporter whether that included drilling in the Everglades.

Gingrich says war on terror 'phony'
Atlanta Journal Constitution
Washington — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday the Bush administration is waging a "phony war" on terrorism, warning that the country is losing ground against the kind of Islamic radicals who attacked the country on Sept. 11, 2001.
A more effective approach, said Gingrich, would begin with a national energy strategy aimed at weaning the country from its reliance on imported oil and some of the regimes that petro-dollars support.
"None of you should believe we are winning this war. There is no evidence that we are winning this war," the ex-Georgian told a group of about 300 students attending a conference for collegiate conservatives.
Gingrich, who led the so-called Republican Revolution that won the GOP control of both houses of Congress in 1994 midterm elections, said more must be done to marshal national resources to combat Islamic militants at home and abroad and to prepare the country for future attack. He was unstinting in his criticism of his fellow Republicans, in the White House and on Capitol Hill.

 Giuliani: More Ethanol, Nuclear Power
The New York Times (register)
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani on Thursday defended his commitment to renewable energy such as ethanol production despite his law firm's work on behalf of major oil companies.
Campaigning in Iowa, the first caucus state and home to more than two dozen ethanol refineries, Giuliani promised to lead the country away from reliance on foreign oil with construction of ethanol plants and nuclear reactors. Ethanol ''gives us hope for the future,'' Giuliani said while touring the Hawkeye Renewables plant in Fairbank.
Yet at a stop at a diner in Waterloo, the former New York mayor was questioned about his law firm, Houston-based Bracewell & Giuliani, and its lobbying work.

 Richardson Sells Oil Refinery Stock
Associated Press via NYT
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson, who promotes renewable energy as a way to wean the nation off of fossil fuels, has sold his stock holdings in the country's largest independent refining company.
Richardson owned stock in Valero Energy Corp. worth between $100,001 and $250,000, and had stock options valued between $250,001 and $500,000, according to a financial disclosure report filed earlier this month with the Federal Election Commission.
Richardson said Thursday he sold the oil company stock because ''it was just a distraction'' in his campaign.

Gov. Bill Richardson Touts Energy Plan
Associated Press via NYT
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) -- Democratic presidential contender Bill Richardson on Monday proposed dramatic increases in automotive fuel economy in the next 10 years and the near-elimination of industrial greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Previewing the national energy strategy he will unveil later this week, the New Mexico governor and former energy secretary called for ''an Apollo program'' that would vault the nation into a massive undertaking to wean itself from fossil fuels. He also said he would encourage shared sacrifice, but he was quick to add that under his vision Americans could keep their SUVs. Those big vehicles would get better gas mileage, he said.

 Obama’s Energy Vision
The National Review
Detroit, Mich. — Barack Obama has charmed America with a silver tongue, sonorous voice, and infectious optimism. But when it comes to policy details, the young Illinois senator sounds a lot like a thin, grim Al Gore.
On Monday, Obama came to America’s Motor City via a gas-guzzling charter jet and a thirsty Chevy Suburban SUV to deliver a major policy address on his “Plan to Change the Cars We Drive and the Fuels We Use.” Obama informed a sold-out Detroit Economic Club luncheon littered with stunned auto executives that America faces its greatest challenge since World War II: The fight against “the tyranny of oil.”

McCain: U.S. must change domestic energy policy
The Dallas News
PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Wednesday that America's current energy policy needs revamping with more focus placed on alternative forms of energy.
"We need to increase our technology of hybrid cars," McCain told reporters after a campaign stop at a restaurant in the Detroit suburb of Plymouth. "We need to increase our use of ethanol and all kinds of alternative fuels, and we need to go back to nuclear power."

Obama: U.S. Auto Fuel Efficiency Lacking
Associated Press via NYT
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Monday faulted U.S. automakers for failing to do what foreign manufacturers have accomplished in producing fuel-efficient vehicles.
Uttering words not often spoken in Detroit, Obama said U.S. energy policy must change in order to help domestic automakers answer the rising global demand for efficient autos.

 McCain: Address Energy Security, Warming
Associated Press via NYT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican presidential contender John McCain on Monday warned about U.S. reliance on foreign oil and the threat of global warming, dismissing even some in his own party who suggest climate change is a Hollywood-driven notion.
The way people in this country use oil ''is a serious threat to our security, our economy and the well-being of our planet,'' the Arizona senator said in a speech to the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

McCain: Energy, Warming Are Twin Threats
Associated Press via NYT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful John McCain is calling the United States' foreign-oil reliance and global warming twin threats the country must aggressively confront.
''National security depends on energy security,'' the Arizona senator says in a speech he is to give Monday in which he suggests the country can't achieve either if it remains dependent on oil-rich Middle Eastern nations linked to terrorists.

 Al Gore's green home improvements
CNN
NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- Former Vice President Al Gore's upscale neighborhood granted the environmental activist approval Tuesday to install 33 solar panels on the roof of his mansion.
The city of Belle Meade, Tennessee, had blocked his application until new rules were approved unanimously late Tuesday, said Gore spokesman Chris Song. The city, located within metropolitan Nashville, said the panels must be placed in areas where they can't be seen by neighbors.

America must cut emissions, Edwards says
The Des Moines Register
Nevada, Ia. - America should drastically cut carbon dioxide emissions, conserve electricity and increase the fuel economy of its cars, former U.S. Sen. John Edwards said here Tuesday.
The North Carolina Democrat, who is running for president, said few scientists doubt that the Earth is warming because of human activity. The trend will lead to disaster unless dramatic steps are taken, he said.

Edwards Touts His Energy Efficient Home
AP via NYT
NEVADA, Iowa (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on Tuesday defended the construction of a sprawling, 28,000-square-foot house in North Carolina, arguing that his home is a model of energy efficiency.
''The house was built from the beginning, both in its location for passive solar and the use of active solar, to help provide some of the energy for the house,'' Edwards said in an interview with The Associated Press. ''It doesn't provide all of the energy, but it provides some.''

Richardson May Be the Man With the Energy Plan, Udall Says
CQ Politics.
...If this White House won’t move to kill the drilling ban, Peterson said, then there’s little hope the next president will since the announced 2008 candidates seem to lack experience on the issue.
That comment drew a strong rebuttal from Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., who pointed out that at least one does — his state’s governor, Bill Richardson, who served as Energy secretary under President Bill Clinton.
Noting that Richardson also hails from a state that produces oil and gas, Udall said: “I think he’s got the experience, and he’s got the plan.”

Vilsack plan favors sources beyond corn for ethanol
The Des Moines Register.
Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack said Tuesday that corn-based ethanol will fail to meet the nation's renewable-fuel needs, and he proposed tax incentives to promote other sources as part of a long-term national energy plan.
The outsider candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination said in a speech in San Francisco that if elected, he would propose tax credits to improve the technology to produce other types of ethanol.

Via Las Vegas Sun: Iowa Gov. stumps for president in early caucus state Nevada
Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack visited Nevada this week, equaling the number of times in 2004 that a Democratic candidate for president visited the state (John Kerry visited once).
"This is really putting us on the map nationally," said state Sen. Dina Titus, who helped bump up Nevada's spot in the nomination calendar at a party meeting in Chicago. "We're going to be seen as the gateway to the West."
