Electapres.com Longshot GOP Hopeful Hunter Has Bead on South Carolina Dollars

CQ Politics

One thing that is clear from the early stages of Rep. Duncan Hunter’s longshot bid for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination is that he has a fondness for the initials “SC.” The longtime representative of the far reaches of Southern California has trained much of his early presidential campaign efforts on South Carolina.

The transcontinental connection for Hunter has to do with issues involving national defense. Hunter is the top-ranking Republican and former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, and he is hoping to make inroads in a state that has a number of military facilities and general strong-defense mentality.

Electapres.com Romney 'Absolutely Wrong' on 'Secret' Timetables, Hunter Says

ABC News

ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Mitt Romney's morning show embrace of private "timetables" for U.S. involvement in Iraq has drawn fire from a rival for the Republican presidential nomination.

"Romney is absolutely wrong in recommending a secret timetable," Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., tells ABC News in a telephone interview while campaigning in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. "Secret timetables are bad because in the end they all become public and the enemy uses them to estimate the limit on America’s endurance."

Hunter, who is a Vietnam veteran and a former chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, thinks the U.S. can achieve a "successful exit" from Iraq if it accelerates the on-going rotation of Iraqi battalions currently stationed in peaceful parts of Iraq into Baghdad and other contentious zones.

Electapres.com A Friend in Duncan Hunter

American Spectator

Duncan Hunter, a solidly conservative U.S. Representative from California since 1980, has a two-part answer for those who say his low name identification and lack of obvious financial wherewithal will doom his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.

First, he says he has the right "three pillars" as issues to build his campaign on: He's the most experienced in standing up for a "strategic national defense." He's the most accomplished on border security. And he is dedicated to "reversing the one-way trade street with China" as part and parcel of a national security effort toward "the restoration of what I call the arsenal of democracy."

Real Clear Politics.

WASHINGTON -- When Bob Hunter, a Riverside, Calif., businessman, would hear of a conservative's campaign that needed volunteers, he would pile his family into the station wagon and drive off to ring doorbells. Hunter's son Duncan grew up believing in retail politics.

When Hunter returned home after serving as an alternate Goldwater delegate at the 1964 Republican convention in San Francisco, he told Duncan about chatting with another alternate, an amiable fellow, some actor, named Reagan. Who two years later was elected governor. Duncan learned early on about rapid upward mobility in politics.

SignOnSanDiego has the story.

Is it possible that Duncan Hunter's presidential campaign strategy – to win his party's nomination by painting himself as the most conservative of the Republican primary contenders – is already paying off?

Certainly those promoting the Alpine congressman think so, as they trumpet a straw poll this month showing that GOP officials in Arizona's most populous county prefer Hunter to big-name Republicans such as John McCain, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and Newt Gingrich.

Electapres.com Here they come

Via Washingtonpost: Iowa Gov. Vilsack to Run for President

Democratic Gov. Tom Vilsack of Iowa officially joined the fray today, two days after the mid-term elections. Iowa kicks off the voting portion of presidential election season with its precinct caucuses in 2008. Vilsak, the home-grown candidate, will work hard to build his efforts in Iowa and cement relationships with activists and donors before the rest of the candidates declare themselves in the coming months. This puts more pressure on other potential candidates to declare sooner than later.

Democratic Gov. Tom Vilsack of Iowa took the initial step in his long-shot bid for the White House Thursday, establishing a presidential campaign committee and seeking an early jump on 2008.

Last week, Rep. Duncan Hunter of California, the Republican chair of the House Armed Services Committee, also declared his intention of running in 2008. With the Democrats taking control of the House, Hunter will lose his chairmanship.
