Gingrich on Obama's chances: Yes he can
The LA Times
HONOLULU -- Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says the presidential candidate who best communicates a message of change will win, and so far that candidate is Sen. Barack Obama.
Gingrich, in the islands promoting his book "Real Change," predicted in a telephone interview from Maui that Obama will surge ahead of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic nomination and pose a significant challenge to Republican Sen. John McCain.
"If McCain can't communicate a vision of dramatic change for America, he'll just lose, whether he appeases conservatives or annoys conservatives," said Gingrich, architect of the "Contract With America," which helped Republicans take the House and Senate in 1994.

Gingrich Says He'd Have Been a Contender
Associated Press via NYT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday he could have been a contender, but has no regrets about skipping the race for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.
Gingrich said he'd had a Web site ready to launch this week and already had received several million dollars in pledges.
''I think we would clearly have been competitive financially within three weeks, and we literally had not even set up the Web site yet,'' he said. ''But what hit me was it would have been an underdog campaign. I mean, clearly, if you were going to come from behind, I think it would have been a real campaign. I think we would have had a chance to win.''

 Gingrich Won’t Run in 2008
The New York Times (register)
Newt Gingrich has sent so many hints pointing in so many different directions that we’re dizzy trying to follow them all. But now, it appears, he’s made up his mind.
Rick Tyler, Mr. Gingrich’s spokesman, confirmed today that the former Republican House speaker has decided against a presidential run in 2008.
Mr. Gingrich was “presented with legal advice this morning,” said Mr. Tyler in a quick phone interview. “There was a choice presented.”
The choice was to remain chairman of his political action committee, American Solutions, or to allow advisers to move forward with an exploratory committee. But he could not, legally, do both, Mr. Tyler explained.

 Newt, Don’t Run
American Spectator
... The hard truth is that, in a general election, Gingrich would go toe to toe with Hillary Clinton — in unpopularity. In a Rasmussen poll this August, a majority had an unfavorable opinion of the leader of the Republican Revolution: Only 37 percent viewed Gingrich favorably, with 54 percent holding a negative view. Hillary was viewed unfavorably by 52 percent and favorably by 48 percent. With voters eager to “turn the page,” a contest between Newt and Hillary would be redolent of a bitter past. The Republican party owes Newt Gingrich a big debt. It will benefit should GOP politicians borrow some of the initiatives that result from his latest project. But not if he runs for president.

Gloomy GOP Could Benefit Newt Gingrich
Newsweek
It's hard to take Newt Gingrich seriously when he says he might run for president. In the nearly nine years since he resigned as Republican speaker of the House, Gingrich has floated the idea of a presidential candidacy numerous times, almost always when on TV to promote a new book. But he has never taken the plunge.
And so in recent weeks, as Gingrich has once more made rumblings about running for president, experienced Newt watchers wondered what, exactly, the former speaker was selling this time. The answer: American Solutions for Winning the Future, a Gingrich-led advocacy group that launches this week, promising new solutions to old problems like immigration, education and health care. Gingrich has promised to spend the coming weeks seriously considering the viability of a presidential campaign. But few Republicans are holding their breath. At this late hour, it seems Gingrich couldn't possibly still launch a viable presidential campaign.

Gingrich Will Decide on White House Race if Supporters Pledge $30 Million
ABC News
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says he still might run for president if supporters will pledge $30 million by November.
"You can't bring all your good ideas if you don't have the resources to communicate," Gingrich told reporters Thursday at a breakfast in Washington.
Gingrich is holding a national Internet-based workshop next week. Afterward, his top political adviser, Randy Evans, will spend October seeing if he can generate pledges of $30 million, which Gingrich said would be needed to compete with the leader in the GOP presidential money chase, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
On Nov. 1, if the pledges pan out, Gingrich will consider running, he said. He didn't say when he would decide, but noted that Nov. 13, when Ronald Reagan announced his candidacy in 1979, is a "propitious" date.

Gingrich says war on terror 'phony'
Atlanta Journal Constitution
Washington — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday the Bush administration is waging a "phony war" on terrorism, warning that the country is losing ground against the kind of Islamic radicals who attacked the country on Sept. 11, 2001.
A more effective approach, said Gingrich, would begin with a national energy strategy aimed at weaning the country from its reliance on imported oil and some of the regimes that petro-dollars support.
"None of you should believe we are winning this war. There is no evidence that we are winning this war," the ex-Georgian told a group of about 300 students attending a conference for collegiate conservatives.
Gingrich, who led the so-called Republican Revolution that won the GOP control of both houses of Congress in 1994 midterm elections, said more must be done to marshal national resources to combat Islamic militants at home and abroad and to prepare the country for future attack. He was unstinting in his criticism of his fellow Republicans, in the White House and on Capitol Hill.

Bob Dole on John McCain--and the Newt
The LA Times
Former Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas, who knows a little something about losing presidential campaigns, having been thumped by Bill Clinton 11 years ago (has it been that long already?), is feeling sorry and puzzled for Sen. John McCain, whose one-time front-running candidacy for the '08 GOP nomination has spiraled downward in recent weeks. And Dole has some sharp words for former House speaker Newt Gingrich.
Dole was on Bloomberg TV's "Political Capital with Al Hunt" over the weekend, ostensibly to talk about co-authoring the report on improving healthcare for wounded veterans. But Hunt also asked the senator who would be the strongest Republican candidate next year?
"You know," Dole replied, "my heart has always been with my good friend John McCain. But it's just not happening. The buzz is gone. I mean, he's a great guy and thought he--he sticks to his guns. Whether it's campaign finance reform, which has cost him some people, and whether it's immigration, where I think he was on the right track....Or whether it's his support for the war. They are all very principled, but I don't know how he puts it all back together."

Gingrich Predicts Clinton - Obama Ticket
Associated Press via NYT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats will nominate Hillary Rodham Clinton for president in 2008 and Barack Obama will be her running mate, former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich predicts.
The GOP will have three ''formidable'' choices in Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson, said Gingrich, who is considering whether to get into the race.
Gingrich is ruling out John McCain's chances among the Republican contenders.
The Arizona senator ''has taken positions so deeply at odds with his party's base that I don't see how he can get the nomination,'' Gingrich said Sunday in a broadcast interview.

 Newt flirts with Thompson
The Politico
Newt Gingrich's long, slow striptease over whether he will seek the presidency in 2008 looks like it might come to an unexpected conclusion: a date with Fred Thompson.
Publicly, Gingrich has been sending signals making clear that a presidential candidacy for him is becoming less likely. Privately, he and some of his closest advisers have been meeting with -- and, in at least one prominent case, going to work for -- the lobbyist-actor and former Tennessee senator.
"I've always said it was unlikely I would run," Gingrich said in an interview last Friday with The Associated Press. And, he added, if Thompson "runs and does well, then I think that makes it easier for me not to run."

Newt Gingrich goes nuclear: May enter race to foil 'pygmies'
The Washington Examiner
Gingrich mocked Republican presidential candidates for subjecting themselves to a May debate hosted by Chris Matthews of MSNBC's "Hardball."
"You're watching an utterly irrelevant, shallow television celebrity dominate everybody who claimed they want to lead the most powerful nation in the world," he said.
Gingrich ridiculed "the idea of 10 or 11 people standing passively at microphones," and said he refused to "shrink to the level of 40-second answers, standing like a trained seal, waiting for someone to throw me a fish."

 The Newt watch
The LA Times
Newt's presence is seen, but is it felt? Some of his luster is being stolen by Fred Thompson's meteoric rise. My feeling is that Newt does not like to be upstaged.
With Fred Thompson now seen as a sure bet to enter the Republican presidential fray, Newt Gingrich looms as the last remaining Hamlet on the GOP side. On the one hand, the former House speaker doesn't seem to be taking direct steps toward a candidacy; there is no evidence, for instance, that he spends his spare time lining up big-money backers.
But guess who's in Iowa today? Yes, Gingrich will be in Des Moines and Sioux City, helping shepherd local meetings for a nationwide group called "American Solutions for Winning the Future." In case that doesn't ring a bell, Gingrich formed it earlier this year. It's raison d'etre: nothing less than developing "big, real, breakthrough" ideas for grappling with "the most important issues facing the country."
And then there's this: as reported in Iowa earlier this week, the "American Solutions" folks ponied up $17,000 to the state Republican Party to reserve space for a "large presence" at its August presidential straw poll in Ames.

Gingrich Rewrites 9/11 History in Immigration Ad
ABC News
...while making his argument that undocumented workers pose a terror threat, Gingrich rewrites 9/11 history.
"Mohamed Atta, and several other 9/11 hijackers were in the United States illegally," Gingrich begins the ad. Photos of Atta and other 9/11 hijackers appear and the word "Illegally" -- printed in bold, red letters -- flashes over the screen.
"Today, more than five years since that tragic day, our borders remain open to gangs, drug dealers and terrorists," says Gingrich in the ad.
However, according to the 9/11 Commission Report, Gingrich's statement is incorrect.

Gingrich forecasts GOP losses in 2008
The Boston Globe
WASHINGTON --Republican Newt Gingrich, in a jab at President Bush, warned on Friday that the GOP will lose the White House and Congress in 2008 if the nominee is perceived as a continuation of the Bush presidency.
Addressing a conservative organization, the former House Speaker never mentioned the president by name, but his political point was clear.
"If the Republicans run a stand-pat presidential candidate who ends up being on defense for all of September and October and who is seen by the country as representing four more years, the fact is that Republicans are not going to" win, Gingrich told the American Enterprise Institute.

Gingrich: Immigration Hurts McCain More Than Abortion Hurts Giuliani Among GOP Voters
ABC News
John McCain tells ABC News that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich "may be right" for thinking that the Arizona senator's immigration stance is a bigger threat to his bid for the GOP's 2008 presidential nomination than former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's support for abortion rights.
"Sen. McCain carries both the burden of McCain-Feingold and now the burden of the McCain-Kennedy bill," said Gingrich in a question and answer session following a Friday speech to the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. "And I think, in a sense . . . if you were handicapping, he has the greatest challenge in a Republican primary in explaining those positions."
In an exclusive interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos airing this Sunday on "This Week," McCain does not entirely refute Gingrich's assessment.

Would-Be Candidate Gingrich Hasn't Shaken Negative Image
The Gallup Poll
PRINCETON, NJ -- Former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich would face a serious uphill battle to be elected president, should he decide to run. So far, Gingrich has not taken any official steps to enter the race, though he has hinted that he may jump in later this year. Overall, Americans have a negative view of Gingrich, with unfavorable opinions of him outnumbering favorable ones by nearly two to one. When a recent Gallup Panel survey asked respondents for their top-of-mind thoughts on Gingrich, most of the comments had a negative tone to them. Gingrich is viewed more positively than negatively by Republicans, but is rated much less positively among this group than potential nomination rivals Rudy Giuliani and John McCain.

Gingrich: 4 - 1 Odds Against GOP Bid
Associated Press via NYT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gives himself 4-to-1 odds against running for president, an assessment that conflicts with his recent pronouncements about seeking the Republican nomination.
Last month, Gingrich said ''it is a great possibility'' that he would pursue the presidency. But he told The Associated Press this week he would give it ''4-to-1 odds'' against, saying he enjoys being a pundit and book author.
Gingrich outlined his decision-making process to the AP: After holding national Internet-based workshops on Sept. 27 and 29, he will decide whether to form an exploratory committee on Sept. 30. If he does form a committee, he will decide whether to run by Nov. 6, about one year from Election Day 2008.

Former House Speaker Works To Stay In Spotlight Until September Announcement
While former House Speaker Newt Gingrich remains steadfast in putting off a decision on running for president until late September, he appears to be working to insure a continued presence in political circles until he does so. Gingrich used an appearance on Fox News Sunday to promote a speech he'll give on Friday, thus guaranteeing him some attention at both the start and the end of the week.
The timing might not be the best — with Democrats and Republicans both holding debates within days of each other, they're sure to gobble up much of the air time. But Gingrich's hand may have been forced by Fred Thompson, who all but entered the race for the GOP nomination late last week. Both men have been touted as saviors for conservatives disgruntled with the current field, but Thompson is on track to enter the race well ahead of Gingrich.

Newt Gingrich's 527 group spent $136,000 in April on travel, aides' salaries, advice from a prominent Iowa political consultant and other expenses that seem a lot like those racked up by the presidential candidates.
And lately, the former House speaker has sounded as though he is leaning toward seeking the GOP presidential nomination.
His 527 group, though, is not a stealth presidential campaign, said Gingrich's spokesman, Rick Tyler. Rather, American Solutions for Winning the Future is a vehicle to advance big ideas, Tyler said.

 Gingrich Lambastes President and Rove
The New York Times (register)
WASHINGTON, May 29 — President Bush has presided over a Republican Party in “collapse,” and Karl Rove’s strategy in the 2004 presidential election was “maniacally dumb” for focusing so heavily on the conservative base.
The words, perhaps, of Howard Dean, the Democratic national chairman? Or John Edwards? Nancy Pelosi, maybe?
None of the above.
That harsh assessment of the president and his chief political adviser is being offered rather by former Representative Newt Gingrich, who engineered the Republicans’ Congressional election victory of 1994 and went on to become speaker of the House.

 Gore-Gingrich 2008
The National Review
Al Gore took to the stage at the 92nd St. Y in New York Thursday night to talk about his new book, The Assault on Reason. It was classic Gore: a moralistic sermon so forcefully articulated in his pronounced drawl that at times, particularly during the long harangues on global warming, one could be forgiven for mistaking him for a tent-show revival preacher. These days, however, Gore reminds one less of an Inconvenient Truth-telling Billy Graham than a Democratic doppelgänger of former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
Think about it. Both men are flirting with the idea of running for president. Both have used their time away from politics to establish lucrative sidelines as authors and advocates for their core political causes. And both have acquired the habit of frequently criticizing the way the media cover politics in general and presidential campaigns in particular.

Gore, Gingrich, Bloomberg Scenarios in '08?
Real Clear Politics
It's time to deal with it. Could it be possible that the top contenders for President in 2008 are not even running just yet? Will Al Gore jump in and take the Democratic nomination? Is Newt Gingrich really going to run? Will Mike Bloomberg once again prove the greatness of this country: any man with a dream and a billion dollars can reach great heights?
Let's examine the pros and cons - the political calculations - to each of these men getting into an already crowded field. First of all Gore. I could argue that the time is ripe for the former Vice-President to run. He never supported the war in Iraq, thus he has nothing to back away from. He also represents perhaps better than anyone else the essence of multi-lateral foreign policy. Both of these put him right where the base of the Democratic party is on foreign policy. He has over two decades of public service experience - but can make the claim that he does not have any of the negative experience of the past six or seven years. What a perfect mix: the right stuff at the right time.
