McCain donors assist Brownback after endorsement
The LA Times
Some of John McCain's largest political donors sent checks to failed GOP presidential candidate Sam Brownback to help him pay off his campaign debt in the days after the Kansas senator endorsed McCain.
The effort is reminiscent of Hillary Rodham Clinton's donors, who gave $90,000 to former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack after he withdrew from the Democratic presidential campaign and endorsed Clinton last year. Vilsack also used the money to help pay off his debt.
Brownback ended his long-shot bid for the presidency in October, citing a lack of money. He had hoped to become the darling of social conservatives with his stands against abortion and same-sex marriage. Brownback's endorsement of McCain on Nov. 7 gave the Republican senator from Arizona a much-needed boost at a time when his campaign was faltering; it also helped bolster McCain's credentials among conservatives who have been skeptical of him.

 Brownback to Endorse McCain
Associated Press via NYT
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- Sam Brownback, a Kansas conservative and favorite of evangelical Christians, will endorse his former Republican presidential rival John McCain, an advisory from McCain's campaign said Wednesday.
The nod could provide a much-needed boost, particularly in Iowa, for the Arizona senator and one-time presumed GOP front-runner whose bid faltered and who now is looking for a comeback.
Brownback will announce his support for McCain later Wednesday in Dubuque, Iowa, and then travel with the candidate to campaign in two other cities in the state, the McCain campaign advisory said.
It's uncertain how much weight the Brownback's backing will carry; the Kansas senator dropped out of the race last month with little money and little support. While he is a favorite of religious conservatives, he failed to persuade them to embrace him as the GOP's consensus conservative candidate. He spent months emphasizing his rock-solid opposition to abortion, gay marriage and other issues important to the party's right flank, but left the race ranking low in national polls and state surveys.

 Brownback and Giuliani Discuss Abortion
Associated Press via NYT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Sam Brownback pronounced himself ''much more comfortable'' with Rudy Giuliani's position on abortion after the one-time rivals for the Republican presidential nomination discussed the issue Thursday.
Giuliani flew to Washington for a meeting he requested with Brownback in the Kansas senator's Capitol Hill office. Brownback dropped out of the race last week, citing poor fundraising, and his former rivals have been seeking his endorsement.
The two men spoke briefly to reporters afterward.
''I'm much more comfortable,'' Brownback said. ''Justices are key. He's stated publicly many times about his support for strict constructionists like, I believe he said Roberts. John Roberts is a personal friend.''

 Giuliani, Brownback to Meet Thursday
Associated Press via NYT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani plans to meet Thursday with conservative Republican Sen. Sam Brownback, who is weighing whether to endorse a candidate after dropping out of the race last week, the senator's spokesman said Thursday.
Giuliani supports abortion rights; Brownback is an ardent abortion foe.
''Mayor Giuliani asked to meet with Senator Brownback, and Senator Brownback is happy to sit down with him,'' said Brian Hart, the senator's spokesman. ''Senator Brownback is talking to a few people but doesnt intend to endorse anyone right away.''
Giuliani, the former New York mayor, leads national polls in the race for the GOP presidential nomination but is mistrusted by many religious conservatives because of his stands in favor of abortion rights, gay rights and other issues. Brownback, a Kansas senator, is popular with religious conservatives despite failing to become their consensus candidate.

 Brownback's Out. Who's Helped?
The Washington Post
The news that Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kans.) will likely leave the 2008 presidential race tomorrow comes as little surprise to close watchers of the race.
While The Fix was an early believer in Brownback's ability to influence the race in Iowa due to his roots in the plains and strong social conservative ideology, the Kansas Senator was never able to articulate a real argument for his candidacy.
The death knell of Brownback's campaign came on August 11 when he was finished third in the Ames Straw Poll. Brownback made no secret of the importance of Ames to his candidacy and besides former Gov. Mitt Romney (Mass.) had the largest operation at the event.
But, he was beaten by not only Romney but also former Gov. Mike Huckabee (Ark.). Huckabee's win installed him as the most electable social conservative candidate -- knocking Brownback off that pedestal and, for all intents and purposes, ending the rationale for his candidacy.

Brownback to Withdraw From GOP Race
Associated Press via NYT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican Sen. Sam Brownback, the Kansas conservative who struggled to raise money and gain recognition in the 2008 presidential campaign, will drop out on Friday, people close to him said Thursday.
Money was a main reason for his decision, said one person close to Brownback who requested anonymity because the candidate had not yet announced his plans. Brownback is expected to announce his withdrawal in Topeka, Kan.
It's widely anticipated Brownback will run for Kansas governor in 2010, when his term -- his second -- expires. He had promised in his first Senate campaign to serve no more than two terms.

 Brownback charts own path
The Boston Globe
Republican Sam Brownback, trying to energize his languishing presidential bid, is reaching across the political aisle to some unusual political bedfellows.
"We're trying some different plays," the Kansas senator told the Globe editorial board today.
This week, Brownback will join an unnamed Democrat to offer a resolution for Congress to apologize for slavery and segregation. Brownback said he expects a tough fight on the resolution -- which will not include any call for reparations -- but said that the apology is "not a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength."
Already, with Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden, Brownback is pushing a plan for a federal system in Iraq -- with strong Kurdish, Sunni, and Shia regional governments -- as a way to end the bloodshed and allow US troops to withdraw from combat patrols.

For starters, there's an appearance Friday with Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Joe Biden to offer a diplomatic solution in Iraq.

 Brownback Complains About Catholic Slur
Associated Press via NYT
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful Sam Brownback said rival Mike Huckabee should apologize for a supporter's ''prejudiced whisper campaign'' against him for being Catholic.
Huckabee issued a statement Tuesday night that didn't apologize for the remarks but said they were neither approved nor condoned by his campaign. He said he was glad that the supporter had issued his own apology and clarification.
The supporter, a pastor in Windsor Heights, Iowa, had sent an e-mail to Brownback supporters pointing out that Huckabee is an evangelical Protestant and Brownback is not. Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, is an ordained Baptist minister.
''I know Senator Brownback converted to Roman Catholicism in 2002,'' Rev. Tim Rude, pastor of Walnut Creek Community Church, wrote in the e-mail. ''Frankly, as a recovering Catholic myself, that is all I need to know about his discernment when compared to the governor's.''

ABC News
ABC News' Julia Bain Reports: Republican presidential candidate Sam Brownback's campaign blasted rival Mitt Romney Tuesday for serving on the board of Marriott International "which generated tens of millions of dollars in revenue through in room pornography services at its hotels."
In a press release, the Brownback campaign calls a new Romney television advertisement focusing on the need to protect children from exposure to pornography and sex and violence in the media, "a move rich with irony" in light of his work with Marriott.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful Sam Brownback is counting on his conservative credentials and a Midwest bond to lift his candidacy in Iowa.
The Kansas senator is making some inroads.
Although far behind in the polls and fundraising, Brownback has stuck to a well-honed strategy, waging a classic grass-roots campaign away from the glare of the media spotlight by mingling with activists in living rooms, parks and churches. He's made repeated trips from his neighboring state to campaign in Iowa, where he underscores his cultural ties.

WASHINGTON --Sam Brownback says he harbored a "hatred" of Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton until he experienced a religious awakening in the mid-1990s.
Brownback, a Republican presidential hopeful, details in a new book how the change in outlook led him to make a stunning apology to Hillary Clinton a few years later during a Senate prayer breakfast.
"I was considering what I should say when I confronted all the anger that I held for the Clintons," the Kansas senator writes in the book, "From Power to Purpose: A Remarkable Journey of Faith and Compassion."

The e-mail requested help in fact-checking a series of statements about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Chiding Romney, Brownback signs on for Iowa straw poll

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Presidential candidate Sam Brownback said yesterday that he will compete in the Iowa straw poll and chided fellow Republican Mitt Romney for claiming victory in the early test of political strength.
Two other lower-tier Republican candidates, Mike Huckabee and Tom Tancredo, also announced yesterday that they would compete in the straw poll in August. They joined Brownback in challenging Romney to a series of debates before and during the event.
The flurry of announcements came after Rudolph Giuliani and John McCain bowed out of the straw poll earlier this week, rendering the traditional event all but meaningless. That left only Romney among the top-tier candidates planning to participate.
