Electapres.com Bayh Endorses Clinton for President

Associated Press via NYT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, who once aspired to the Democratic presidential nomination, on Monday endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton's bid for the White House.

''I believe she will run a campaign that is both tough and smart when it comes to protecting our nation's security,'' Bayh said at a news conference with Clinton.

Bayh, a former governor of a Republican-leaning state, is in his second term in the Senate. He won re-election with 62 percent of the vote in 2004 and is considered a possible Democratic vice presidential choice in 2008.

A colleague of Clinton's on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Bayh pursued a possible presidential bid until late last year when he dropped out of the race amid evidence that Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois were building formidable campaign organizations.

Electapres.com Poaching red state donors

The Hill has the story.

Democratic White House hopefuls such as Sens. Barack Obama (Ill.), Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and former Sen. John Edwards (N.C.) are rushing to capitalize on an impressive national fundraising network Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) built in the mold of President Bush’s pioneers program. The strength of Bayh’s connections could boost his profile when the Democratic nominee selects a running mate next year.

Electapres.com Evan Bayh Withdraws From 2008 Presidential Field

The New York Times has the story.

Senator Evan Bayh, Democrat of Indiana, who just two weeks ago took the first steps toward a White House bid in 2008, announced Saturday that he was quitting the race. He said he had concluded that his hopes of winning were too remote to make it worth continuing.

Electapres.com NH Presidential Roundup

Via AP:

Barack Obama's first visit to the first-in-the-nation-primary state was an apparent success Sunday... he stayed too long and had to obtain an $11,000 charter plane back to Chicago.

Evan Bayh was also in the state this weekend. The inevitable comparisons of small crowds for Bayh vs. large ones for Obama prompted one Bayh aid to say kiddingly that the overflow crowd of 1,000 for Bayh was in the next room.

Perennial NH visitor Newt Gingrich will be in the state again this week. He will appear at the annual Manchester Republican City Committee dinner on Thursday.

Electapres.com Evan Bayh exploring bid

Via Washington Post: Bayh Considers Presidential Bid

Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh (D) announced yesterday that he is forming a presidential exploratory committee, a move that allows him to raise money and travel the country in support of a potential national candidacy in 2008.

Appearing on ABC's "This Week," Bayh said the American people "need someone who can deal with the dysfunction here in this city so that our government begins to empower our people to fulfill their potential," adding: "If I can be that individual, so be it." He said he expects to make a final decision on whether to run by early 2007.

Electapres.com Filling the Warner void

Via: The Concord Monitor: Democrats scramble to fill void left by Warner

Democratic presidential hopefuls are scrambling to scoop up the supporters of former Virginia governor Mark Warner, who declared yesterday that he will not seek the presidency in 2008. Many of his newly stranded political and moneyed supporters are likely to be wooed by the remaining cabal of Democratic presidential contenders, particularly if the activists live in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.

The most obvious Democrat to benefit from Warner's surprise announcement, in the view of many party strategists, is Sen. Evan Bayh, a Democrat from Indiana, who cleared his schedule yesterday to make phone calls to donors and party activists who tentatively had signed on with Warner for 2008 and are now free agents.

Warner was seen as a centrist and alternative to Hillary Clinton. His former boosters will be naturally looking to support a new candidate who is closer to the middle of the road than many of the currently declared Democratic choices.
