Dueling Obama/Palin polls explained

As Patrick Appell noted at Andrew Sullivan’s blog, two polls are now out showing wildly different results in a potential Sarah Palin-Barack Obama 2012 race. One, from Time, has Obama up by 21 points. The other, from PPP, shows a tie. So what gives?

Is Obama’s Re-Election a Sure Bet?

Americans are increasingly unsure of President Obama’s handling of the economy, a new CBS News poll released this morning shows — but come 2012, unless there’s another economic meltdown, that lack of confidence in the president will have zero impact on how people vote, one professor contends.

Mr. Obama’s re-election is virtually guaranteed, according to a formula concocted by American University Professor Allan Lichtman. Little beyond a massive scandal directly tied to the president or a major military or foreign policy failure could change that, according to Lichtman’s system, which he calls the “13 Keys.”

Obama Returns to Missouri, Site of Slim 2008 Loss

Filed under: Obama — admin @ 8:48 pm

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For some in President Obama’s White House, Missouri remains the state that got away, nearly two years after his election.

Mr. Obama was the first Democrat since 1964 to win Indiana and the first since 1976 to win North Carolina. But his loss in Missouri by the narrowest of slivers (fewer than 4,000 votes) was of special disappointment.

How the Census Makes Obama’s Re-Election More Difficult

Of course, no one knows what the political environment will be in 29 months, but the 2010 Census is certain to change the Electoral College math in a way that will favor the Republicans. Should the president roll up the popular vote majority that he did in 2008, the new scorecard for 2012 won’t make a difference come Election Day.

Why Hillary Will Be On Obama’s Ticket In 2012

While the country digests yesterday’s primaries, the White House political machine is undoubtedly working overtime on a more distant challenge – how to get President Obama reelected in 2012.

Here’s a prediction: the Obama administration will bounce Joe Biden off the 2012 ticket, and invite Hillary Clinton to run in his stead.

Pelosi’s Loss Could Be Obama’s Gain

In Washington these days, President Obama is rumored to be hoping Republicans capture the House of Representatives in the midterm election in November. There’s no evidence for this speculation, so far as I know, but it’s hardly far-fetched. If Mr. Obama wants to avert a fiscal crisis and win re-election in 2012, he needs House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to be removed from her powerful post. A GOP takeover may be the only way.

Obama Wants Afghanistan Wind-Down Before 2012 Election: Review

… The one point on which I found his meeting minutes really illuminating was his long chapter on Afghanistan. Entertaining, too: The interplay between the neophyte president and his generals has its comic side. (“Accustomed to dealing with Bush, the Pentagon kept it real simple for the new president.”) It’s fascinating to watch Gen. David Petraeus, Adm. Mike Mullen and the rest of the wily officers discover that their new commander- in-chief isn’t so easy to game.
